The Careers Curriculum at Wyvern Academy

Is driven by our aims to provide pupils the opportunities, support and information they need in order to make informed decisions and achieve long term financial well-being.

We are working towards achieving the eight Gatsby benchmarks, identified as the core dimensions of good careers and enterprise provision in schools

These benchmarks form the backbone of the DFE's guidance for delivering careers education in schools.

The DfE sets out why these benchmarks are important:

• “Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, teachers, governors and employers”

• “All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers.”

• “The curriculum offers excellent opportunities for developing the knowledge and skills that employers need and subject teachers can be powerful role models to attract pupils towards their subject and the careers that flow from it. Schools should ask all teachers to support the career development of young people in their tutorial role and through their subject teaching”

 

There are three parts to Careers Education at Wyvern, each is equally valuable.

Work done in Vision and Values time

The Pupil Experience Passport increases awareness of the World of Work and raises awareness of the opportunities that are available to everyone.

Job of the week and other activities allow pupils to explore unfamiliar occupations.

Taught Careers lessons within our PSHE programme.

There is a full resources programme available for teachers to use and adapt to meet the needs of their pupils. Files can be found in the PSHE area of the staff shared ares.

Additional activities are organised to coincide with events such as National Apprenticeship Week.

Careers across the curriculum

From 2018 there has been the statutory duty for all teachers to link their subject area to careers. This can take many forms

• talking to pupils about where your subject could lead them.

• looking at a particular job and seeing how your subject links to it.

• include opportunities for pupils to develop their employability skills by leading a task or presenting to the class.
