Wyvern students reflect on lives lost for Holocaust Memorial Day

Students at Wyvern Academy, part of Consilium Academies, have taken part in an online assembly to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The assembly was designed to be hard hitting and to encourage students to examine what we can do to remember the Holocaust in the modern day.  The assembly was held ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on the 27th of January.  The 27th of January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide, they promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day  to remember the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups and during more recent genocides.

The Wyvern students learned about the personal stories of some victims of the Holocaust and reflected on what they could learn from the atrocity about accepting people who are different from ourselves.

Mr Scott Parker Head of School said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day is such an important day, and it was only right that our students’ spent some time reflecting on it.  These are difficult issues, but I believe that young people need to learn about atrocities such as the Holocaust and I think having them learn about the individual experiences of Holocaust victims was a poignant and impactful way to do this.”
