MFL Department: Curriculum Intent & Overview 

At Wyvern we teach Spanish as a foreign language.  Spanish is the fastest-growing modern foreign language in the UK.  At Wyvern Academy, we shape our curriculum to prepare students for a modern, global world. Learning Spanish is not just about vocabulary. It is about opening doors to new cultures, boosting brain power, and creating exciting career paths.

How We Teach Spanish 

We use a spiral curriculum. This means we revisit key ideas and grammar topics often. Each year, we add more detail to what students already know. This builds long-term memory and confidence. 

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) 

Students start with the basics of everyday life. They learn to talk about themselves, family, school, and hobbies. We focus on phonics, core vocabulary, and verbs. Pupils quickly learn to speak and write in the past, present, and future tenses. We also explore traditions like Día de los Muertos to bring Hispanic culture to life. 

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11 - GCSE) 

Students deepen their skills using the Edexcel exam specification. They look at a variety of different topics including the environment, global issues, identity, and future plans.  We focus on real-world communication and exam skills.  Students practice translation, creative writing, and spontaneous speaking.
